Chiropractic care after a car accident

What chiropractic care for crash-related neck and back pain involves, who may be helped and what to ask before starting.

If you think you are having a medical emergency, call 911 now. Do not use this form for urgent symptoms.

What it is

After a car crash, many people have neck, back or shoulder pain from strained muscles and ligaments. Chiropractors are licensed healthcare providers who evaluate the spine and joints and may use spinal manipulation, soft-tissue techniques, therapeutic exercise and other physical-therapy methods. In California a chiropractor does not prescribe prescription drugs or perform surgery.

Who it may help

People with new neck, back or joint pain, stiffness or headaches after a collision may ask a licensed provider for an evaluation. Pain can start hours or days after a crash. Care is not right for everyone: a provider screens for fractures, nerve injury and other conditions that need a different kind of care.

What to expect

A first visit usually includes a history, an exam and sometimes X-rays or a referral for other imaging. Treatment plans commonly run for weeks, with visits tapering as symptoms improve. Progress varies and no result is promised.

Risks to understand

Soreness after an adjustment is common and usually short-lived. Rare but serious risks have been reported with neck manipulation, including injury to blood vessels. Tell the provider about every symptom and prior injury, and seek emergency care for sudden severe headache, weakness, numbness, trouble speaking or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Insurance and questions to ask

Ask whether your auto policy includes medical payments coverage, how the visits will be billed, and whether the provider can treat on a lien while a claim is pending (see our lien overview). Get the cost and the treatment plan in writing.
